Whom We Assist

Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity describes differences in brain function that affects daily mental functions. It embraces the differences in how the brain functions and how we behave as a result.

Neurodivergent people may be diagnosed with autism, ADHD, OCD, dyspraxia, dyslexia, dyscalculia, or as having Tourette’s Syndrome. Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is one of the most common Neurodivergent conditions and the spectrum can range from mild ASD traits to more complex autism.

Whilst Neurodiversity has now been clinically embraced as variations of “normal” functioning rather than disorders, these conditions are often seen in conjunction or as components of other medical conditions.

Neurological Disorder

Neurological disorders are a group of illnesses that affect the brain, spinal cord and nerves that branch out from these areas and into other parts of the body or the “Nervous System” as it is commonly called.

The nervous system is responsible for many of the bodies processes including movement, sensations, eating and drinking, swallowing, breathing, speech, learning, memory and mood.

There are various causes of neurological conditions including:

  • Genetic Disorder i.e. Huntington’s Disease, Muscular Dystrophies
  • Congenital Disorder i.e. Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy
  • Infections i.e. Meningitis, Encephalitis
  • Brain Injuries

These are often referred to as Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) ie stroke, tumour, degenerative conditions such as Alzeimers, Motor Neurone Disease or Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) ie head injuries

Lotus Disability Care supports individuals and their families who have a variety of Neurological Conditions. We build a multidisciplinary team involving both formal and informal supports and a variety of therapists to manage symptoms and improve independence and quality of life.

Autoimmune Conditions

An autoimmune disease is the result of a malfunction of the bodies immune system. The immune system is responsible for protecting the body against harmful substances such as bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. In autoimmune conditions, the body fails to differentiate between what is harmful and what is healthy body processes and attacks the body instead of protecting it. Autoimmune diseases can affect all systems in the body.
  • Muscles and Joints i.e. Lupus (SLE), Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Digestive Tract i.e. Ulcerative Colitis, Chron’s Disease
  • Endocrine System i.e. Graves Disease, Addison’s Disease
  • Skin i.e. Psoriasis
  • Nervous System i.e. Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIPD), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis
Autoimmune diseases can result in chronic disability and substantially reduced quality of life. Lotus Disability Care provides supports through partnering with multidisciplinary teams to enhance individual’s independence and quality of life.

Mental Health

Mental health is a state of mental and emotional well-being. It allows us to cope with stress, realize abilities, learn, work and contribute to our community. Mental well-being is a vital part of our overall health. Looking after our social and emotional health is just as important as taking care of our physical health.

It is a fallacy that just because a condition or illness is not seen, that it does not exist. Due to this, often people battle in silence. In reality, mental heath conditions can be just as debilitating or even more so than other conditions.

There are numerous mental health conditions including:

  • mood disorders ie depression, bipolar disorder
  • anxiety disorders
  • personality disorders
  • psychotic disorders ie schizophrenia
  • eating disorders ie anorexia nevosa, bulimia
  • trauma-related disorders ie post-traumatic stress disorder
  • substance abuse disorders

Mental health conditions require a psychosocial approach taking into account a variety of components including accommodation, financial, social, supportive networks, skills development and treatment modalities.
