NDIS Changes 2026: What Participants Need to Know After 27 August

NDIS Changes 2026

For many NDIS participants, hearing that new laws have started can immediately raise concerns: Has my funding changed? Do I need a new plan? Do I need to do anything right now?

The good news is that most participants do not need to make immediate changes to their current supports.

The NDIS changes 2026 are being introduced in stages. Some changes started on 27 August, while other major changes will be introduced progressively from October 2026.

What Changed on 27 August 2026?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme Amendment (Securing the NDIS for Future Generations) Act 2026 received Royal Assent on 20 August and took effect for several changes from 27 August.

For participants, two changes are particularly important.

Unscheduled plan reassessments

Participants can still request a plan reassessment when their circumstances or support needs significantly change.

However, the rules are now tighter.

Only the participant, their plan nominee or their child representative can request an unscheduled reassessment. The request must explain what has changed and include supporting evidence where required. The NDIA can take up to 90 days to decide whether to reassess, vary, or not reassess the plan.

If the situation is urgent, minor or short-term, a plan variation may be more appropriate.

Stronger fraud and record-keeping rules

The new legislation also strengthens NDIS safeguards and fraud controls.

Participants or their plan managers will need to keep records for NDIS support payments for three years. Further changes to claiming timeframes will begin from 1 December 2026.

These measures are designed to protect participants and improve the integrity of the NDIS system.

What Starts From October 2026?

This is where many participants may notice changes later.

From 1 October 2026, participant budgets for social, civic and community participation supports and capacity building daily activities will progressively be reset when plans are reassessed or new plans are created.

This does not mean everyone’s NDIS funding changes on 1 October.

The change applies as relevant plans are reassessed or renewed. The official NDIS guidance also confirms that participants should continue using their current plan and supports as usual unless they are told a change affects them.

Myth: “My Plan Hasn’t Changed Yet. Is That Normal?”

Yes.

If you are an existing participant and nothing has changed in your plan yet, that can be completely normal.

The government has confirmed that many reforms will happen gradually rather than all at once.

Your current plan does not automatically become invalid because the new legislation has started.

Instead, pay attention to your next check-in, reassessment or renewal and make sure your current supports still reflect your needs.

What Should Participants Do Now?

You don’t need to panic or change your supports simply because you have heard about the reforms.

Instead:

  • Keep using your current NDIS plan as usual.
  • Keep track of changes in your support needs.
  • Keep relevant reports and evidence.
  • Know when your next reassessment is due.
  • Speak with your my NDIS contact or Support Coordinator if your circumstances change.
  • Ask questions if you receive information you don’t understand.

The NDIS confirms that participants can continue using their current plan while a reassessment request is being considered.

Frequently Asked Questions

What changed on 27 August 2026?

New rules took effect covering areas including unscheduled plan reassessments, record-keeping and stronger NDIS integrity measures.

Do I need to change my current NDIS plan?

Not automatically. The NDIS says participants should continue using their current plan and supports as usual unless they are told a change affects them.

What happens from 1 October 2026?

Participant budgets for certain social, civic and community participation supports and capacity building daily activities will progressively be reset when plans are reassessed or renewed.

Can I still request a plan reassessment?

Yes, but the criteria for an unscheduled reassessment are now tighter. There must generally be a significant and ongoing change in support needs or relevant circumstances.

Where can I find official information?

The Australian Government and NDIS websites are being updated as the reforms roll out. Participants should use these official sources for the latest information rather than relying on older articles or social media posts.

The biggest takeaway from the NDIS changes 2026 is simple: the new laws are being rolled out progressively, so don’t assume your current plan changes just because the legislation has changed. Keep using your supports, stay informed, and check what applies when your plan is reviewed.
