Next week is World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 – a time for us to remind the importance of suicide prevention support. At Lotus, your trusted NDIS mental health service, we hope to be part of your journey in overcoming challenging times.
Why World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 matters?
Suicide is a major public health challenge, taking the lives of more than 720,000 people each year.
Do you know in Australia, thousands of people reach out for support everyday? Over 1.4 million people contact Lifeline – a national charity providing free, 24-hour telephone crisis support service in Australia.
Moreover, take a look at these data, as they reveal much about the need to care more about these people:
- About 9 Australians take their own lives every day
- It’s also estimated that more than 54,000 people try to do so each year.
- Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15–44.
That’s why we have World Suicide Prevention Day 2025. Held on 10th September, this day is a global day of awareness, where communities, organizations and governments join efforts to prevent suicide.
For 2025, the theme is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”. This theme calls on us all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma and foster open, compassionate conversations about suicide.
So what makes this day meaningful?
- Encourage openness, empathy and support about suicide – creating environments where people feel able to speak up and seek help.
- Reminds us that suicide prevention and mental health need to be a top priority in public policy.
- Pushes for evidence-based strategies that can truly make a difference.
- Highlights the need to improve access to quality care
World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 – How can early support help prevent suicide?
Early support can help prevent suicide by catching warning signs and offering help before things get worse.
- Reduces risk: Early help lowers suicidal thoughts and attempts, cutting deaths and attempts by about one-third.
- Builds strength: Support helps people manage tough feelings, find hope and build coping skills.
- Makes help easier: Reaching out early makes it easier for others to give the right support and prevents problems from getting worse.
Early support is key to preventing suicide in Australia. By reaching out to services like Lifeline, online helplines, community programs, or health professionals, people can get the guidance and tools they need to cope with painful feelings and difficult situations.
Lifeline number: Call 13 11 14 – crisis support service is available 24/7
