Not sure if you’re eligible for NDIS? Here’s how to check

If you’ve heard about the NDIS, you might find the rules confusing at first but checking if you’re eligible for NDIS is simpler than it sounds. Knowing early can save time, help you prepare documents and give you a clear idea of what to expect.

What does it mean to be eligible for NDIS?

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a program run by the Australian government. The NDIS program supports people who are living with a permanent and significant disability, helping them live more independently, reach their goals and take part in everyday life.

So what does it mean to be “eligible” for this program?

Being eligible for the NDIS means you meet the requirements to access its support and funding. Once you’re found eligible, the NDIS works with you to understand your goals and create a personalised plan.

Eligibility starts with providing evidence of your disability and its impact to an Access Request, if your application is successful, you gain the right to choose your support.

Main criteria to be eligible for NDIS

  • Age: You need to be under 65 when you first apply. For children under 7, there’s an early childhood approach with slightly different steps.
  • Residency: You must live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen with a Protected Special Category Visa.
  • Disability: Your disability must be permanent and significant – meaning it’s likely to last your whole life and has a big impact on daily activities like moving around, communicating, self-care, learning, or managing tasks.
  • Functional impact: You need ongoing help or support to live independently and take part in the community. Short-term conditions or injuries that are expected to heal don’t qualify.
  • Location: The NDIS operates across Australia, but you must live in an area where it’s available.
  • Early intervention: Children under 7, or people whose condition could improve with early support, may also qualify, even if they don’t meet all the standard disability criteria. This includes special rules for developmental delays in young children.
